The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) begins when children reach the age of three, at which time some children may attend a nursery setting. The Reception class in Primary School is the final year of the Foundation Stage and this prepares children for their future learning.
The curriculum in Reception is designed in such a way that it is flexible and can respond to the needs and interests of each child. In Reception the children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage framework in which they learn new skills, acquire new knowledge and demonstrate understanding in the seven areas of learning and development.
The children should learn through the following three key areas first. These areas form the foundations upon which all future learning and development are built:
- Communication and Language;
- Physical Development;
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development.
As children continue to learn, these three areas help them to develop skills in Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding of the World and Expressive Arts and Design.
Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside.
We cover our learning through a range of exciting topics... this year our topics are; Tall Tales, Minibeast Madness, Wonderful Weather, Toys, People who help us and Trains, Planes and Automobiles. These topics grow and evolve with the children's interests as each half term progresses. The children have a range of learning opportunities through the different areas of the curriculum as well as visits to other places such as Mop End searching for bugs, Bekonscot Railway as well as our local train station and many other exciting venues.
