PE Curriculum Statement

 PE Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent:

At Haddenham Community Infant School, physical development and education is an integral part of the curriculum that is inclusive and engages all pupils.  Children develop the knowledge, skills and competence to excel in a broad range of sporting activities and physical challenges.  We aim to deliver high quality teaching and learning opportunities that enable all children to achieve their best and progress in physical strength.  Children participate in a range of activities; including competitive sport engendering good sportsmanship too.  We aim for all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time and be able to make decisions for adopting healthy and active lives.

Implementation:

  • Children participate in high quality PE lessons twice a week covering a range of activities to build strength and skills for sporting endeavours.
  • A designated sports teacher works alongside the teachers to develop strength, power, endurance, mobility, sport specific skills and speed and agility with clear progression across the year groups and ability range.
  • Classes follow a PE overview that builds on skills and ensures a wide variety of sports.
  • Children are taught about the importance of mental, physical and emotional wellbeing and the effects of exercise and physical activity on their own wellbeing.
  • We provide children with opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities that are inclusive, enjoyable and increase children’s physical activity and development.
  • Annually, the children participate in inter school sporting events, wellbeing days and whole school sports day.

Impact:

At Haddenham Community Infant School, we ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop fundamental skills that can be applied to specific sports and activities as they progress.  All children are provided with the skills and given opportunities to demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.  Our children are physically active and this has a direct correlation with the positive implications in the classroom.  Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of exercise and good mental health.  We hope children enjoy PE and develop a love of sport and physical activity that they pursue outside of the school day and in future life outside HCIS.
